NUCLEUS Field Trip: Science in Media and RRI

What role does media play in facilitating science’s relationship with society, and vice versa? How does media itself relate to research? And how do cultural barriers to freedom of information affect how media communicates? NUCLEUS partners travelled to Budapest, Hungary, for a Field Trip focused on science in media and RRI. Paired with the European Union of Science Journalists’ Associations (EUSJA) Conference, the Field Trip revealed changing pressures and opportunities in science journalism.
Key themes were an increasing number of interactions between scientific expertise and popular culture, along with a rise in polarised language; changing professions and roles in science communication; and the importance of understanding regional scientific culture.
